TRIBUTE
You will, of course, have your own personal and individual memories of Steve and of the special times, the happier times you shared in his company.
Where to start, there are so many wonderful memories of Steve and his life.
Steve grew up in Airedale Castleford, a true Airedaler and Yorkshire lad. Steve was son to Jean and Terry and a brother to Dawn, Julie and Gary. Heattended school in Airedale and was very athletic.
Leaving school he did what so many others back then did and worked down the pit. Steve worked at various pits such as Wheldale pit and Kellingley
There are so many stories to tell about Steve and his younger self.
The story about locking Gary out of the house – Gary shouting that he was going to tell his mum. The story about Steve running in the Mackeys fun run. Jean used to work at the Macintosh sweet factory (Nestle Rowntree) and there was a fun day where a member of each family would run 100 metres. However the runners would be staggered based on their age, so Steve being young and in his teens had the full length to run.
Steve being Steve rocked up in his shorts and spikes (very professional) and was pipped to the finish line by a matter of inches. But to be fair he did have to run the full length where others would be starting closer to the finish line.
The story about Steve in his rugby days, standing alone until a fight broke out and he was one of the first ones there, looking out for his team mates.
Steve was very fast and held the record in high school for well over 10 years, this he was very proud of and talked about often.
The story about Steve’s love for animals and the fact that he would hide them in his bedroom from his mum and dad. Letting out the rabbits and ending up with lots of baby rabbits for some reason.
Steve was always an entertainer and would put on shows for his mum and dad. Steve was a brilliant entertainer, where others would shy away, Steve loved the limelight.
Amanda, Steve’s daughter says – ‘I remember our holidays when I was a child, going abroad but the best holidays for me were the camping holidays. From the very heavy canvas tent to the lighter more manageable tents. Electric hook up and the TV, as a kid I loved the fact that we had the TV with us, but if only we could have watched something other than horse racing, Star Trek or Thunderbirds.
I remember our adventures in Knaresborough, sailing the Lido with our dingy boat and tackling the rapids. Those where the days.’
Steve loved his aviary and the birds he kept. Especially his cockatiel Nelson, there are many a photo of Amanda sat with Nelson on her head or shoulder. As she said, ‘I think if Helen would have agreed it, dad would have had an aviary in the garden.’
Amanda wanted so much as a child to be like herdad, her hero, her rock.
Steve loved his pond, full of Koi carp. His love for ponds and Koi carp was known by many. he was known by many in the aquatics department, his knowledge about ponds, pumps and fish was endless. And illness didn’t stop him from giving orders about how the pumps work for the pond at home. He hadn’tbeen home 24 hours before he was sat in the garden talking the family through how to sort the pumps out.
Steve loved Cliff Richard and Amanda has very fond memories of listening to Cliff Richard songs and watching the Summer Holiday film, as a child.
Steve’s love for music was known by all that knew him. His career in music started when he was out with friends and was egged into singing on the Karaoke. A Neil Diamond song was picked for him to sing the reaction from everyone afterwards spurred his music career as a tribute singer.
He was told that he sounded just like Neil Diamond and so the seed was sown. He had a fairly successfulcareer as a tribute singer “The Neil Diamond Experience” going from venue to venue, pubs, clubs and supermarket car parks. Charity events and even a care home.
Perhaps the most remembered was when he sang at the Cas ground, his biggest crowd yet. Singing Sweet Caroline and having all the fans sing along.
Steve was always happy to perform and entertain, he did this so well.
Along with his amazing voice, his hair was the real winner for the fans and those that knew him.
With his roadie by his side, he and Helen were the perfect team. Helen was his biggest fan and his very own critic.
Everyone has so many happy and priceless memories of Steve. Most recently he will always be remembered for singing at Amanda’s wedding and it is still talked about now by the girls at her work. One actually thought he was Neil Diamond, that’s how good he was.
As Amanda said, ‘You really did make mine and Alison’s day and one of the best memories we will ever have. I know you were proud to be there that day and said that you wouldn’t have missed it for the world. You really did make our day so special and that is something we will have forever.’
As Amanda told me, ‘Cyprus was the holiday destination to see the Neil Diamond Experience and where dad met the lovely Helen.
Dad and Helen met in Cyprus at Jacks Bar on a sunny October day in 2005. The romance started with a karaoke slip from dad asking Helen out for dinner and drinks. It was a true Shirley Valentine moment, when dad came home with her.
From this their romance grew and they got engaged on 24th November 2005. Their wedding was a perfect day full of love, family and friends.
Dad and Helen enjoyed many a holiday abroad and met some wonderful friends along the way. The stories they have of dad and the memories shared will last a lifetime.’
And there were the highly competitive friendly fishing contests, it’s not the size that matters it the amount of fish caught. On the rightly namedDiamond steps. The competitions won by Steve and the certificates he earnt for target range, killer pool ect.
Steve being the life and soul of the group and always full of cheeky banter and kind words.
Steve and Helen enjoyed 15 wonderful years together. The memories they made are priceless. Spending as much time together as they could, having family time and movie night Saturdays.
The amount of part watched films Steve had seen are endless.
Dan and Jodie have their own memories of Steve – Dan’s tribute to Steve, so thoughtful and accurate:
Steve you light up any room with your infectious personality and brought nothing but joy and laughter to our family. Savagely taken away from us in your prime and far, far too soon. I’ll miss our chats about fixing certain Tesco pieces of equipment, our leaky roof at work and how passionately you spoke about your fish. You were always our star here and now forever a star looking down. Best step dad I could ever wish for.
Steve was a wonderful grandad to Luke, Jacob, Grace and Evie.
He will be forever remembered for being in their lives and will be dearly missed. He made wonderful memories with the children and was so thoughtful and caring.
Steve was a true Yorkshireman throughout his lifeand this didn’t change when he moved to Lincoln. Reading tributes from his colleagues and friends at Tesco, they describe him as being a true Yorkshire man, loving their chats about anything other than work. Question is - was any actual work done?
I know that for his family, it still doesn’t feel real that he has gone and they wish more than anything that they all could have had more time with him.
You all have your own individual memories of Steveand because of this he will always be remembered.
You will love him always and forever
